What does your role entail?

How long have you got?! Covering both the Head of Credit and Head of Underwriting roles (as Head of Credit & Underwriting) keeps me on my toes. A typical business day includes underwriting a share of new business applications, liaising with clients and professional advisors, as well as supporting the rest of the team. On top of that, Head of Credit is considered a second line of defence role, which involves the management of credit risk for the business in-line with policies, standards & strategy and serving as the credit oversight for my colleagues on the front line. I also act as Chairperson on Credit Committees and participate in the wider strategy of the business as part of the Management team.

As of February 2021, what trends are you seeing in the Specialist Finance market?

There has been an increase in the number of new businesses entering the Specialist Finance market over the last six months or so. In response, many existing lenders are now updating lending parameters across their product range to reflect an increased risk appetite, whilst reducing pricing in the face of increased competition.

What would you say is noteworthy about Arbuthnot Specialist Finance?

ASFL, as we are known, has a lot of special qualities that come from being part of a highly reputable and financially secure banking group. A successful business depends on good people and I believe we have a formidable team that will go from strength to strength as we continue our expansion over the coming years.

Are there any personal or professional highlights this year for you?

Getting through 2020 without my mental well-being deteriorating has been a major achievement for me! I’m sure the same applies to everyone as we now hope for light at the end of the tunnel. There was also a new addition to my family in the shape of our first dog, which has been a real tonic and a welcomed distraction from COVID-19. We had always planned to have a dog once our kids reached a certain age and level of responsibility, so working from home has been a real benefit in that respect. Unfortunately, it’s still Mum and Dad who do most of the walks and cleaning up!

Finally, do you have any hobbies/interests outside of your role?

I have quite a few interests outside of work, but I am a keen golfer, so that tends to take up most of my spare time.
