Meet the team - Oliver Mill

This week we talk to Oliver, a private banker based in Manchester and covering clients across the north of England.

What does your role entail? 

My role as a private banker is to help clients meet their financial objectives through a range of solutions across lending, deposit, and investments. Clients’ needs may change as they move through their journey with Arbuthnot Latham and not only do I need to advise on their banking, but also be a sounding board. It is key that I understand what is impacting their lives, what the future may hold, what may be coming up the road and what we can do to mitigate any risks. It isn't transactional, it’s an ongoing relationship.

What challenges are clients facing at the moment? 

2023 has shown more than ever the vulnerability of some banks so clients and prospects are understandably looking for confidence when deciding where to bank. Talking to clients about how we operate at Arbuthnot Latham is key as well as explaining how we differ to other banks, focusing on long-term growth over any short-term gains.

The other challenge we are hearing from prospects is the lack of service from their current banking provider. As a private bank, we are on the front foot with clients, engaging with them as much or as little as they need, but most importantly, being there for them when needed. We do the simple things right, which means a lot to clients, who sometimes just need to action a simple banking task but are faced with long call centre queues elsewhere.

What do you think sets Arbuthnot Latham apart in the market? 

Our versatility and breadth of service offering really sets us apart. The ability to have your private banking, along with commercial, wealth planning, and investment management all in one place is attractive to clients, especially in Manchester. We have a deep understanding of our clients, which means we can offer advice on all aspects of an individual’s personal finance.

But providing a wide offering does not dilute our service – we prioritise personal service and have a real focus on relationship banking. This focus forms the basis for our solutions to clients, particularly around lending where our versatility is best displayed. We collaborate with clients to find a borrowing solution which fits their needs, rather than being product lead. This is particularly useful for individuals who may have varied or irregular income streams, or quirky lending requirements. 

What do you like to do outside of work? 

I am trying to keep up with Manchester’s increasingly growing and diverse food and drink scene, but the city is beating me as the options are overwhelming! Aside from searching for the next exciting restaurant opening in town, I will typically be at Anfield watching Liverpool FC or trying to tackle Manchester airport for a weekend away.
