Meet the Team - David Michael
We catch up with one of the latest members to join our investment team. David Michael joins as Senior Investment Manager for our discretionary investment services aimed at UK financial advisers.
What does your role entail, and what has attracted you to this role?
As a Senior Investment Manager for Intermediaries, I will play an important role on the Arbuthnot Latham (AL) Discretionary Investment Services for UK Financial Advisers. My role entails working alongside a range of national Wealth Managers to help achieve their clients’ long-term financial goals. This is a great opportunity to be able to bring forward Arbuthnot’s investment expertise to the broader adviser community.
What was your first day like?
Incredible! Call it luck or judgement but my first day happened to fall at the start of the quarterly Investment Committee (IC) Series. Therefore, not 30 minutes through the door, it was straight into AL’s views on the current macroeconomic environment and discussions about all things asset classes. Not only is the quarterly IC Series highly relevant for my role, but it was also a great way to meet the broader team and understand the ‘house view’ given the present juncture in markets. Overall, it was a fantastic way to start!
Could you tell me about your background and experience?
Having started out my career in Corporate Banking with HSBC, my focus quickly turned to Investment Management (IM) and private clients. Over the past 13 years, I have focused on all elements of IM (Relationship Management, Portfolio Management and Investment Selection) for high-net-worth individuals. This has taken me from Private Banking to insurance businesses. Most recently, I spent over five years at Mercer Private Wealth where I provided a suite of investment management solutions via their Wealth Management advisers.
Finally, what are you most excited about?
Lots of things. Firstly, the challenge and opportunity to disrupt the discretionary intermediary marketplace, an already competitive space. Secondly, working for an organisation with a clear identity, vision, and goals; and importantly the dynamism to help deliver the desired financial objectives. Continuing that theme, I am also extremely excited to work with impressive individuals. There was a big pull in me moving to AL where I felt positive relationships and first-rate service are at the heart of everything AL does.
