From Merchant Bank to Private Bank, Arbuthnot Latham, founded in 1833, has been based in Exeter for over 20 years providing exceptional client service in the South West and surrounding areas. We speak with the South West team about the Bank and their experience in the South West region.
Who is Arbuthnot Latham?
Arbuthnot Latham is an independent bank offering Private Banking, independent Wealth Planning, Investment Management and Commercial Banking to individuals and businesses. Our approach focuses on a highly personalised service. This service is tailored around our client’s individual requirements, helping them to achieve specific life goals with the flexibility to adapt in the short-term, but helping them reach their longer-term ambitions.
The Arbuthnot Latham name has been associated with banking for over 180 years. It is an exciting time for the bank, we have a firmly established team in the South West, offering a full suite of services aimed at high net worth individuals and commercial entities.
You therefore have a deep heritage; tell me about the history of Arbuthnot Latham?
Arbuthnot Latham is one of the oldest banks in the City of London. Of the handful of merchant banks whose name survives today, Arbuthnot Latham remains one of the only independently owned Private Banks. Arbuthnot was one of the elite ‘merchant banks’, enjoying a special patronage of the Bank of England. Today we offer a broad range of services to private clients, their families and their businesses.
Initially based solely in the City of London, as well as the South West, we now have offices in the North West and Dubai and just celebrated winning the ‘Outstanding Private Banking Boutique’ title, at the Private Banker International Awards in London.
What are the advantages of being based in the South West?
With a buoyant and dynamic local economy, with well-established family businesses, successful corporate entities and hi-tech start-ups spawned by the University of Exeter, Arbuthnot Latham are confident about their ability to grow and serve clients within the Region. The South West has few local private banks. Some organisations are reducing their regional footprints as they struggle to understand how to get the local delivery of banking, and advice services, right. This continues to provide a great opportunity for Arbuthnot Latham, where we can use our 20 plus years of experience to deliver the right advice and service to our clients locally.
Can you talk me through the make-up and experience of the South West team?
Our team of Private Bankers are Chris Reah, Tony Byrne and Matthew Elliott who are experts in advising high net worth individuals, families and businesses on their financial journey, building long term relationships and becoming their trusted adviser.
Arbuthnot Latham was the first UK Private Bank to achieve Corporate Chartered Status in 2011. Our Wealth Planning service is provided by Ian Scott and Ian Avery who are both of the Certified and Chartered status, with Ian Scott also being a Fellow of the Personal Financial Society.
Our Commercial Banking offering is led by Robert Salisbury, who with his newly established team, brings a wealth of experience advising and assisting businesses in this region.
Who is a typical client?
There is no such thing as a typical client. Both our personal and business clients expect a highly personalised service, with insight and a specific understanding built around their particular needs. Whether you are a professional, an entrepreneur, or a property developer, at Arbuthnot Latham you will receive a tailored and personal experience that adapts to your requirements, from a team who have the expertise, experience and autonomy needed to provide it.
Often our new clients feel under-served by the larger established banks and seek a level of client service seldom seen in modern day banking. This is what attracts them to the distinctly different offering at Arbuthnot Latham.
What differentiates Arbuthnot Latham as a Private Bank?
Bespoke wealth advice and a high level of service are extremely important to us, with our clients being at the heart of everything we do.
As an independent Private Bank, we have the ability to find the right solution for each of our clients, prioritising their needs over everything else. Being a boutique Private Bank allows us to be more adaptable and really get to know who we are working with. For Arbuthnot Latham, this is a tried and tested business model and ethos, which allows us to develop lasting and trusted relationships with our clients.
What does the future hold for Arbuthnot Latham and your presence in the South West?
Our goal is to be the premium Private Bank for high net worth individuals and businesses in the South West. We are looking for clients who want something different from their bank, and to be part of their individual journeys. We will continue to promote the Arbuthnot Latham brand in the Region, as is evidenced by the recent launch of a dedicated Commercial Bank offering.
