What does your role entail?

My role at Arbuthnot Commercial ABL revolves around asset-based lending deal origination across the Midlands & South West region, where I generate funding opportunities from the corporate finance, debt advisory, private equity, and commercial finance broker communities.

It is fair to say that I have been around quite a while, so I am well known across the Midlands, less so in South Wales, Bristol, and the South West, so I am enjoying the challenge of getting out and about (now that restrictions have been released!) to meet new introducers and prospects alike.

As of November 2021, what trends are you seeing in the Midlands & the South West region?

Up until a month or so ago, I would have said that the outlook is extremely positive for businesses in the Midlands and South West, with plenty of deal opportunities around, be it transactions (MBO, MBI, acquisition) or refinances looking to fund growth. However, there are several headwinds right at this moment - supply chain issues, rising costs, and labour supply. This means that some deals may be more difficult to complete in the short-term until the dust settles and there is more clarity on prospects. Certainly, there are still good deals to be done, but from speaking to some of the turnaround specialists I know, there is also a feeling that there are choppy waters ahead for some.

How has asset-based lending (ABL) supported the Midlands & South West?

Asset Based Lending is extremely useful at providing working capital, growth funding and cash leveraged against asset values to fund a transaction, such as an MBO, MBI or bolt-on acquisition, and many of our deal completions in 2021 fall into these categories. The Midlands are well known for their industrial heritage of manufacturing, which means a suite of assets available to leverage against, including receivables, stock, plant, machinery, and property. All of which we can fund against to assist with a particular deal. Add to that our ability to provide some cash flow lending on top and this makes for a powerful offering.

What would you say is noteworthy about Arbuthnot Commercial ABL?

Having worked in the ABL industry for 20 years now, for several different funders, all of which would have had their USP’s, I think what sets ACABL apart is our ability to provide certainty that we can deliver on a deal very quickly. Advisors and their clients are increasingly seeking underwritten terms at a very early stage, and understandably so, and with the experience of the senior leadership team, backed by Arbuthnot Latham, a private and commercial bank that has been around since the 1800s, we can provide the comfort required when asked.

Are there any personal or professional highlights so far this year for you?

2021 is turning out to be my best year so far at Arbuthnot Commercial ABL, with several quality deal completions, which have resulted in our nomination at West Midlands Dealmakers for “Asset Based Lender of The Year”.

Finally, do you have any hobbies/interests outside of your role?

I used to play a bit of golf, but back problems meant I had to hang up my clubs, so now it’s mostly cycling in my spare time (including trips to Mallorca and Italy to take on iconic climbs such as “Sa Calobra” and the dreaded “Stelvio.” Do not get me wrong, I am no Chris Froome, but I do enjoy it, plus the less energetic “sport” that is fishing, which my son is currently keen on.
